Description
Summary:How does the correspondence between an individual's reputation and his self-evaluation affect his attractiveness for others? In an experiment designed to explore this question, Ss were given information about a stimulus person's reputation which pictured her as either a high or low worth individual, and subsequently they listened to a tape recording in which the same stimulus person described herself in either a self-enhancing or self-derogating manner. These conditions were arranged in a 2 x 2 factorial design. Results showed that Ss found the stimulus person more attractive in the high reputation condition than in the low reputation condition. Furthermore, the reputation and self-evaluation conditions interacted so that the high self-evaluator tended to be more attractive than the low self-evaluator in the high reputation condition and the low self-evaluator tended to be more attractive than the high self-evaluator in the low reputation condition.
