Description
Summary:Two patients with the accelerated phase of chronic granulocytic leukemia (CGL) complicated by hypercalcemia are described. Both patients had extensive leukemia, and it is likely that hypercalcemia was secondary to bone destruction. However, one of these patients also had acute renal failure and neither patient had measurements of plasma parathormone, so other mechanisms of hypercalcemia cannot be excluded entirely. On the basis of these patients and a review of the literature, we conclude that hypercalcemia rarely complicates CGL, that its presence appears to signify a grave prognosis, and that treatment should include antileukemic therapy as well as other measures known to help control hypercalcemia in malignant disorders.
