Description
Summary:Administered the Short Portable Mental Status Questionnaire (SPMSQ) to 95 65-91 yr old persons admitted consecutively to a geriatric hospital to determine the diagnostic precision of the instrument. Ss were also administered the Bender Gestalt Tests, the Digit Span subtest of the WAIS, and a basic living skills assessment. Scores on the SPMSQ were evaluated to determine their ability to discriminate between organically impaired or functionally impaired Ss; validity was determined by comparison to other test battery scores. Results show a good precision in identifying organic disorders and a consistent association with the other tests. It is suggested that the SPMSQ is a brief, valid screening tool for identifying organic impairment among the elderly.
