Activation of Renin in the Single Juxtaglomerular Apparatus by Sodium Chloride in the Tubular Fluid at the Macula Densa

Summary: | The renin activity of single juxtaglomerular apparatuses in the rat kidney was determined after the macula densa segment of their nephrons was perfused with solutions of varying NaCl content. Increasing the NaCl concentration to 140 mEq/L resulted in a threefold increase in renin activity, whereas isosmotic mannitol, choline chloride, lithium chloride, sodium bromide, or sodium ferrocyanide had no effect. The short time that is required for this effect indicates activation rather than de novo synthesis. This suggests that the enzymatic vasoactive principle of the juxtaglomerular apparatus participates in the functional feedback mechanism which controls single-nephron filtration rate. |
