Summary: | Physical work capacity and some somatic characters were investigated in 304 healthy persons of both sexes aged 15-72 years from Czorsztyn in Pieniny Range (a low mountain area). The phase of regressive changes begins after the age of 30 years. Regressive changes which could be called destructive (involutional) can be observed in Quetelet index (QI), lean body mass (LBM), and maximal O₂ uptake after the age of 55 in males and 50 in females. In males the greatest regression is observed in max. oxygen uptake, fat tissue thickness, forced respiratory volume, maximum breathing capacity, vital capacity; medium regression is observed in body weight, LBM, QI; the smallest is seen in stature. In females there are some differences from males in relative degree of regression. Furthermore while females mature earlier, they age more slowly: at the age of 20-45 years they are physiologically younger than males of the same calendar age. |
