Summary: | The child health associate is a new category of allied health professional capable of providing a wide range of diagnostic, preventive, and therapeutic services to children. Working principally in ambulatory settings as colleagues and associates of physicians, child health associates have the knowledge and the skill to care for a large percentage of the patients seen in a typical pediatric practice. Child health associates and similar health workers in other branches of the health professions have the potential to be major providers of primary health care in the future. Evaluation of the pediatric knowledge and the diagnostic ability of child health associates students and interns indicates that they compare favorably with medical students and approach pediatricians in these areas. |
