Description
Summary:Using a defined glucose-salts medium, phosphorus changes in Escherichia coli were monitored using ^{32}{\rm P}$. The major part of this work was carried out under carbon-limited conditions to simulate activated sludge treatment. Both phosphorus-rich and phosphorus-deficient cells were used. It was found that phosphorus will be taken up under nonproliferating conditions as a direct function of the rate of carbon addition. When phosphorus-rich cells were grown under low carbon loadings, the per-cell content of phospohrus dropped in proportion to the amount of cellular division. The maximum phosphorus levels attained were 4.0 percent during log-growth conditions, 3.0 percent during inorganic ion limitation, and 3.25 percent during the carbon-limited experiments.
