Summary: | Hispanics are the fastest growing ethnic group in the United States and the second-largest Spanish-speaking community in the world. Despite these statistics, there is a lack of health-related psychometric instruments in the Spanish language to assess, diagnose, and evaluate health care for Hispanics. One health domain that has been overlooked, particularly among Hispanics, is that of sleep disturbances and the impact on health outcomes. This gap in sleep research may be related, in part, to the lack of Spanish language instruments to evaluate sleep in Hispanics. This is a special issue on Sleep in Hispanics in Hispanic Health Care International that has provided an overview of sleep problems among Hispanics and sleep-associated health disparities. There remains a gap in the literature on psychometric instruments in Spanish that can be used in clinical practice, research, and education. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to describe the translation process of instruments to a second language and identify sleep measures in Spanish that can be used to improve the diagnosis, intervention, and evaluation of sleep in the Hispanic population.
