Description
Summary:Facilitation of the extinction of avoidance behavior in rats were investigated by the use of prevention (flooding) and observational conditions. Rats were first trained to avoid an electric shock and then divided into 6 groups receiving various combinations of prevention (i.e. prevention vs no prevention) and observation of prevention (i.e. observation of prevention, observation of an empty shock compartment, and no observation). Treatment effects were assessed using response latency to an extinction criterion. The results indicated that response prevention is an effective facilitator of experimental extinction but is more effective when combined with observational learning.
