Lymphosarcomas in Two Gibbons (Hylobates lar) With Associated C-Type Virus

We examined the tissues from 2 cases of lymphosarcoma in gibbons by light and electron microscopy. The animals were part of a group of 6 gibbons purchased together and used in a study on the aging of the spinal column. The animals, a male and a female, were about 3.5 years old at death. Numerous C-t...

description We examined the tissues from 2 cases of lymphosarcoma in gibbons by light and electron microscopy. The animals were part of a group of 6 gibbons purchased together and used in a study on the aging of the spinal column. The animals, a male and a female, were about 3.5 years old at death. Numerous C-type virus particles, similar in morphology and apparent mode of production to those of the avian, murine, and feline leukemia-sarcoma complex, were found in all tissues examined. The particles were approximately 100 nm in diameter, with nucleoids of about 65 nm, and were found budding from, and free between, neoplastic lymphoid cells, histiocytic cells, and megakaryocytes.
