THE INVOLVEMENT OF DOGS IN ENDEMIC CYCLES OF VENEZUELAN ENCEPHALITIS VIRUS
Thirty-one of 40 dog plasmas collected in 1971 at La Avellana, a small village of the Pacific coastal lowlands of southeastern Guatemala had hemagglutination-inhibition antibody titers≥1:80 to Venezuelan encephalitis (VE) virus. Summary: | Thirty-one of 40 dog plasmas collected in 1971 at La Avellana, a small village of the Pacific coastal lowlands of southeastern Guatemala had hemagglutination-inhibition antibody titers≥1:80 to Venezuelan encephalitis (VE) virus. Neutralizing antibody titers were higher to a Guatemalan endemic virus strain than to a strain from the 1969 epidemic-equine epizootic in Guatemala. Previously dogs have been shown to be infected during epizootics of VE virus. Thus dogs may be useful as sentinel animals in epidemiologic studies of endemic as well as epidemic forms of VE virus. |
