Summary: | Advancing medical technology has protracted the agonal phase of life & necessitated redefining death as a complex process rather than as a discrete event. The MD blindly dedicated to such technology perforce leaves the sick & dying unprepared to accept irreversible disease & the natural conclusion to life. Adequate preparation would be tantamount to embodying beneficent euthanasia into medical practice where it now plays a limited role. However, further expansion of the role of euthanasia will require major changes in traditional attitudes of society, changes that will ultimately enhance the MD-patient relationship. AA. |
