Summary: | The article illustrates the possibility of charting the collecting of Moise de Camondo through the invoices and ledgers he conscientiously preserved and maintained. They are a fundamental source for an understanding of the process of the formation of his collection, of its evolution through several decades, allowing us to establish what a particular object was understood to be, and whether it came with a history. The focus here is his taste and the part provenances played in his decisions. Most of Camondo's important purchases were made through Parisian dealers acting on commission who he trusted on matters of authenticity and provenance. Advances in the study of furniture history over recent decades have brought to light impressive provenances for certain overlooked pieces whilst at the same time demolishing some of the more extravagant claims of earlier owners.
