Summary: | Banana creek, Fla., receives much of the natural water runoff from Northern Merritt Island and the wastewater from the Kennedy space center. As a result, much terrestrial and waste materials are introduced into banana creek, thus enriching the water and sediments. The presence of copious amounts of hydrogen sulfide in the sediments located upstream from a few small Islands in the creek suggests that the Island impedes water movement. Distribution of haloduric bacteria, hydrogen sulfide producing bacteria, and sulfide levels in the sediments of banana creek is described. |
