Summary:Rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease are infrequent in Dade County, Florida. Conversely, β-hemolytic streptococci are recovered frequently, particularly from the throats of children 6 to 9 years old. The relationship between group-A β-hemolytic streptococci, clinical illness, and rheumatic illness may be different in South Florida from elsewhere in the United States.
