Summary:Two children with Friedreich's ataxia are reported in whom cardiac manifestations preceded neurologic symptoms. Both cases were initially diagnosed as rheumatic fever and were treated as such with 3 and 12 months of bed rest respectively. The differential diagnosis of Friedreich's ataxia with heart disease and rheumatic heart disease and the possible etiology of the disease are discussed.
