Summary: | Concerns about the growth of scientific & technological enterprises have appeared in a number of areas. Discussions of efforts to regulate science do not have general value until various types of concern have been classified. Concerns about technology include concerns about (1) its physically destructive effects, (2) its effects on ethical values, & (3) its economically exploitative effects. Concerns about science include concerns about (A) research on human subjects, (B) distorted allocations of resources in scientific research, (C) knowledge, including both fear of knowledge itself & fear that knowledge will inevitably lead to undesirable technologies, (D) research accidents, (E) the use of science to support or enhance racial, sexual, or class prejudice, & (F) the particularly scientific ways of attaining knowledge as dehumanizing. If regulation is needed, there are many levels at which it might be imposed & many possible regulatory agencies. W. H. Stoddard. |
