Description
Summary:Last October, with support from the Rockefeller Foundation, Next American City hosted a two-day conference in Washington, DC, called "Open Cities: New Media's Role in Shaping Urban Policy." The event identified the most progressive and useful new media technologies available and the best ways to practically apply them to enhance urban sustainability and quality of life. In this special feature article, Next American City presents a summary of the conference's proceedings, including recaps of keynote speeches by prominent officials including Adolfo Carrion Jr., director of the White House Office of Urban Affairs, and Janette Sadik-Khan, head of the New York City Department of Transportation. By identifying the most effective and innovative new media tools available and announcing their potential to both government officials and the public, Next American City hopes to make real the image of the open city, and make urban life better on both sides of the digital divide.
