Description
Summary:This paper argues that there is no conflict between art and "serious social responsibility," and that the perception that such a conflict exists is the result of an incorrect understanding of what comprises the artistic dimension in architecture. This misconception, which stems from the technological influences toward ever greater abstraction and specialization, has sought to reduce architecture to a merely "aesthetic wrapping" around purely functional buildings. By accepting this reduced agenda, "we have abdicated our responsibility as the framers of man's environment," and thus come to consider architecture as somehow disconnected from social responsibility.
