POSTMORTEM STUDIES OF SKINFOLD CALIPER MEASUREMENT AND ACTUAL THICKNESS OF SKIN AND SUBCUTANEOUS TISSUE
An investigation of skinfold measurements with a Harpenden caliper, and direct measurements of the thickness of skin proper and subcutaneous fat through incisions of the same site was made on 71 Chinese autopsy subjects (43 males, 28 females), varying in age from 1 month to 74 years. The measurement...

description | An investigation of skinfold measurements with a Harpenden caliper, and direct measurements of the thickness of skin proper and subcutaneous fat through incisions of the same site was made on 71 Chinese autopsy subjects (43 males, 28 females), varying in age from 1 month to 74 years. The measurements were performed on 9 different areas of the body. Correlation coefficients between caliper readings and actual fat varied from 0.61 to 0.92, and averaged 0.83 in the 9 areas of the body and the two sexes. Linear regressions of actual fat thicknesses on caliper readings were obtained for the 9 areas and the two sexes separately. There is no regional or sex difference in regression coefficients, but significant differences are found in elevation between males and females of each area (except face), and also between three-fourths of the areas in both sexes. On the basis of these regressions, triceps is recommended as an excellent site, but suprailiac may have advantages over subscapular. Means and standard deviations of the thickness of skin proper at the nine sites in males and females are given, those aged under 11 years and over 11 years being listed separately. Before 11 there is no sex difference; after 11 the males have a thicker skin. |
