Summary: | Clofibrate was administered to 45 patients for varying periods of time up to 4 years with no evidence of chronic toxicity. Clofibrate was more effective in lowering serum triglycerides than serum cholesterol, with more than 75% of all patients with elevated triglycerides having at least a 25% reduction in triglycerides, the absolute reduction in triglycerides being directly correlated with pretreatment values. A reduction in serum cholesterol of 15% or more was obtained in 50% of all patients, those individuals with elevations of triglycerides having the greatest reduction in serum cholesterol as well as being most likely to respond. |
