Summary:IT has been suggested that patterns of physiological activity during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep are directly related to concurrent dream experiences 1–4 . Roffwarg et al. 4 reported a correspondence between REM patterns and visual imagery in 70–80 per cent of vivid dream reports, and concluded that the REMs represent scanning responses of the visual dream images. Thus visually “active” dreams are associated with more REM activity than are “passive” dreams involving little visual activity 2,5 .
