Description
Summary:Fertile secondary hydatid cysts of Echinococcus granulosus were obtained in Meriones unguiculatus by intraperitoneal inoculation of protoscolices. Small secondary hydatid cysts individually transplanted surgically from rodent hosts to the peritoneal cavities of other rodents continued to grow and initially nonfertile cysts eventually became fertile. A system of alternating generations of "breeder" hosts and surgically implanted hosts is proposed as a method to produce a laboratory population of rodents each infected with a single fertile hydatid cyst.
