Description
Summary:In 2 experiments undergraduate Ss rated the favorability of a series of persons each described by pairs of contradictory sentences. Each sentence was composed of a set of positive or negative adjectives that had been prescaled as to favorability and (in the experimental conditions) the identification of the source of the adjective information, where each source was identified by an occupational title which had been prescaled according to information value. The degree of credibility of the sources and the order of presentation of positive and negative adjectives were varied. Reliable recency effects were obtained. Responses were shown to vary as a function of the credibility of the sources of information. A weighted average model was applied to the data and its success in predicting the observed relationships support the notion that source credibility affects the weighting of information. (15 ref.)
