Description
Summary:Metacomprehension involves the process of monitoring understanding & using strategies that promote learning & remembering. Although numerous studies suggest that students can be taught successfully to develop comprehension skills, little attention has focused on how traditional basal-reader instruction can be enhanced to promote & develop metacomprehension abilities. The directed reading activity used with basal selections can be modified so that students engage in several monitoring strategies. The suggested activities promote understanding by requiring students to be active comprehenders & differ from the organization suggested by basal manuals only in that greater responsibility for comprehension & monitoring is assumed by the students. Specifically, students are taught to activate background knowledge, generate questions, make predictions, set purposes for reading, & summarize what was read. 8 References. Modified AA
