Description
Summary:Signing between chimpanzees was studied. Of the 5 chimpanzee Ss, 4 had 4-7 years of complete immersion in American Sign Language (ASL) when being home reared (Gardner, B. & Gardner, R., "Two-way Communication with an Infant Chimpanzee" in Behavior of Non-Human Primates Vol 4, New York: Academic Press, 1971). Signings were recorded during 5 daily 40-minute sessions between Jan 1982 & Jan 1983. Reports were classified into contexts. It was found that the chimpanzees signed to each other, integrating their signing interaction into nonverbal communication. Of all signs reported, 88% fell into the social categories of reassurance, social interaction, & play. 2 Tables, 1 Figure, 8 References. Modified HA
