Summary:Attention is drawn to the inadequate fulfillment of cultural goals in the beginning foreign-lang classes at the Coll level. From the identification of obstacles imposed on the teacher by available textbook materials, time, & staff restrictions, the following guidelines were derived for the development of a cultural component in elementary lang courses: cultural materials must complement the textbook, & must be designed & packaged in such a way that incoming teaching assistants can use them without difficulty. Described are the culture units as developed at the U of Missouri-Columbia to accompany the Coll textbook First Year German (Helbing, R. E., Gewehr, W., & von Schmidt, W. A., New York: Holt, Rinehart, 1975), & the reception of the approach by students in the form of a student questionnaire. Modified AA
