Summary: | L. Campbell & R. Langacker have argued that (see LLBA 13/4, 7905398, 7905098, & 7905390), on the basis of the correspondences of Pochutec vowels with vowels in other Nahuatl dialects, P-Aztecan should be reconstructed with a fifth vowel *i. It is argued that observed vowel correspondences between Pochutec & other dialects result from phonological conditioning that may or may not be evident, & that the correspondences should therefore not serve as the basis for reconstruction of a fifth vowel. 7 Tables.
