Summary: | The theory of control developed in N. Chomsky's "On Binding" (see LLBA 16/2, 8202755) is examined. It is shown that this theory cannot capture the bulk of relevant, if not "standard," control phenomena in Eng, German, & some Slavic langs. A fundamentally different theory of control phenomena based mainly on thematic relations is outlined, on a substantial extension of the lexically-semantic classification of Vs & the inclusion of a conceptual-pragmatic dimension to account for subtle differences & degrees of grammaticality & acceptability. The metagrammatical implications suggest reconsidering & stressing the explication of the interaction among syntax, semantics, & pragmatics within the "autonomy thesis." 1 Table, 8 References.
