Summary: | THE rise of a great man is like the appearance of the sun in early spring-time. As the sun sheds light, warmth, and life after winter's cold and dreary days, so a great man spreads blissful activity and enlightenment after an age of mental darkness and indolence. During the two centuries which followed the expulsion of the Jews from the Pyrenean peninsula in 1493, the Jewish race had produced two men of whom it might be proud--Manasseh ben Israel and Baruch Spinoza. |
