Summary: | Metarules are statements about grammatical rules for generating sentences. In Generalized Phrase Structure Grammar, metarules describe many phenomena which have been described by transformational rules in other models. Examined are so-called Metarule Phrase Structure grammars in both constrained & unconstrained forms. It is shown that these grammars can generate nonrecursive langs, & are therefore too powerful. Possible alternatives to abandonment of metarules include redefinition. 1 Figure, 14 References. B. Annesser Murray |
