Description
Summary:The aim of this guide is to present a comprehensive, yet easy-to-use, review of secondary and college reading tests. Fifty-eight tests are included in four categories: (1) Survey Tests, which are group tests of comprehension, vocabulary, and sometimes rate; (2) Analytical Tests, also group tests and similar to Survey Tests except that they also include diagnostic subtests; (3) Diagnostic Tests, mostly individual tests needing special training to administer; and (4) Special Tests, mostly group tests covering only one aspect of reading or some unusual aspect. The tests were selected from the following sources: Reading tests for secondary grades: A review and evaluation (Newark DE: International Reading Assn, 1972); Edward Fry's review of this pamphlet (in Journal of reading, 1973, 16, 5, 405 & 407); Albert Harris' How to increase reading ability (New York: David McKay, 1970); Guy Bond and Miles Tinker's Reading difficulties: Their diagnosis and correction (New York: Appleton-Century-Crofts, 1973); Roger Farr's Reading: What can be measured? (Newark DE: International Reading Assn, 1969); Oscar Buros' (editor) Seventh mental measurements yearbook (Highland Park NJ: The Gryphon Press, 1972); and from the authors' experiences. For each test, the guide gives the name of the test and publisher, a description of what is being measured, grades in which the test can be used, date of publication or of latest revision, time needed for administration, and a brief evaluation taken, in most cases, from the latest Mental measurements yearbook (1972).
