description The use of word frequency data in analysis of textual content, style, and distinguishing characteristics is not new. The basic methodology consists of the application of multivariate reduction techniques to matrices comprised of all possible pairwise associational coefficients derived from frequency enumerated word-word covariations. The multivariate aspect of the methodology has a history dating back at least 12 years and the concept of constituting word-frequencies as the basic raw data antedates that by at least another five. The major modal points in this history are discussed in order to provide an overview that will put the technique in a proper perspective. AA
