Summary: | Since this symposium addresses a wide spectrum of concerns needing definition, the papers under discussion are divergent in method, scope & goal. Because images of territoriality & personal space originate on different interaction levels between the brain & its environment, a comprehensive evolutionary theory of man /environment relations forms the framework of this commentary. An attempt is made at relating the unique dichotomy of human left & right brain functioning to environmental design considerations. Edney reviews territoriality as an organizer of human behavior. Stokols' paper is a valuable summary of crowding's theoretical perspectives. He makes a distinction between neutral & personal crowding. Altman deals with prehuman cognitive & behavior structures. Evans & Eichelman deal with the problem that proxemic concepts are not explicit most of the time. Modified HA |
