Summary:In response to criticism of attempts to teach native Arabic speakers to produce English translations of Arabic texts, this paper presents (1) an overview of the translation situation of Arab universities, (2) an overview of the morphologised Arabic linkage system and its relevance to Arabic-English translation, and (3) an overview of the relationship between translation and the suppositions which underlie the ability of the target audience to understand and appreciate the experience intended in the source text.
