Summary: | A model for the acquisition of lexical orthography at the primary level is outlined. The model is completed by a review of scientific literature (linguistics, cognitive psychology, & psychopedagogy) & an examination of data gathered from observations of Quebec primary school students. According to this three-dimensional model, learning to spell consists of three phases: (1) development of specific knowledge about each word, as well as general knowledge about the spelling system; (2) acquisition of the graphic system which conforms to orthography; & (3) learning to study written lang. The model has significant implications for both the analysis & teaching of orthography. 15 References. HA Tr & Modified by B. Annesser Murray |
