Summary: | In this introduction to a thematic issue of Langue francaise, the history of linguistic studies of apposition is traced to the Early Middle Ages where the notion of apposition is found to appear in Latin grammarians' works of the 4th & 5th centuries: Priscian's treatment of the notion & syntagma of apposition in Institutiones Grammaticae (Grammar Instruction) is discussed. The neglect of apposition in Port Royal grammar & a renewed interest in it in 18th-century French linguistics are noted: N. Beauzee's articles for Encyclopedie ou dictionnaire raisonne des sciences, des arts et des metiers ([Encyclopedia or an Analytical Dictionary of Sciences, Arts, and Crafts] 1751-1772) & Encyclopedie methodique - grammaire et litterature ([The Methodical Encyclopedia - Grammar and Literature] 1782) are examined. Beauzee's influence on 19th-century grammarians' treatments of apposition is explored, & four orientations (functional, semantic, syntactic, & discursive) in 20th-century apposition research are distinguished. The historical sketch is followed by a brief presentation of the contributions to the journal which are grouped according to the topic & perspective of treatment. 129 References. Z. Dubiel |
