Summary: | A panel discussion among five prominent literacy educators is reported. Participants were Ira E. Aaron, Jeanne S. Chall, Dolores Durkin, Kenneth Goodman, & Dorothy S. Strickland. In the first part of the discussion, the panelists were asked to define literacy & provide their views on current trends in literacy education. The responses led to subsequent discussion of related issues including phonics, emergent literacy, reading/writing relationships, & whole language.
