Summary: | This article focuses on the contributions of PEUL (Programa de Estudos sobre o Uso da Lingua [Language Usage Study Program]) to Brazilian sociolinguistics, &, specifically, to variationist studies. An overview is provided of variations in Rio de Janeiro Portuguese & the areal domain of variations is described. Emphasis is on the systematicity & regularity of a linguistic variable - the formal parallelism - on phenomena of language variation & change.
