Summary: | A review of William A. Foley's The Yimas Language of New Guinea (Stanford: Stanford U Press, 1991 [see listing in IRPL, this issue]). This language is challenging to the linguist because of its polysynthetic nature. Foley adopts what is seen as an eclectic approach, examining not only grammatical structure but genetic & typological relationships, & social & discourse functions. Some of the facets of this complex language described in the book are briefly noted here. The book is found to be well argued & clearly presented, despite the complexity of the material. 2 References. B. Annesser Murray |
