Description
Summary:Two levels are distinguished in the macrostructure of literary texts, corresponding to the operations of inventio & dispositio in classical rhetoric; these are, respectively, the level of semantic macrostructure or fundamental syntax of the text, & the level of syntactic macrostructure or syntax of transformation. At the first level, extensional semantic elements are selected & intensionalized in the deep structure of the text; at the second, the intensionalized material is organized within the deep structure for development toward presentation in the microstructure of the text. Semantic & syntactic-semantic submacrocomponents are distinguished within the semantic macrocomponent; in the latter, the semantic intensional material receives logical &/or chronological organization in a primary operation of dispositio, to be transformed or perpetuated by the syntactic macrocomponent. Theories of compositional analysis & rhetoric are discussed in this framework. 58 References. J. Hitchcock
