Description
Summary:The permanence of Arabic influence in 15th-century Spanish is demonstrated in the analysis of Arabisms in the text of the Ordenanzas del Concejo de Cordoba ([Ordinances by the Council of the City of Cordova] 1435), which are listed & examined by following thematic domains: (1) names of institutions & terms pertaining to the administration of justice, (2) commerce & artifact production & sale, (3) military terminology, (4) agricultural vocabulary, (5) phytonymy, (6) ichthyonymy, (7) culinary terminology, (8) utensil designations, & (9) other. Each Arabism is provided with meaning definition, etymological analysis, historical attestation, & usage context. It is noted that Arabic borrowings constitute 5.3% of the lexical content of Ordenanzas del Concejo de Cordoba, & most belong to loanwords that infiltrated Spanish in the Early Medieval period: the Arabisms are classified into six chronological periods, three of Early & three of Late Middle Ages.
