Summary: | Reports of a working conference held in 1999 in the Czech Republic and devoted to the explosion and fire safety of bituminization of liquid radioactive wastes are reviewed. The reasons for the self-ignition of bitumen compounds, which occurred at the Eurokemik plant (Belgium) and in Tokyo (Japan) are analyzed. Experience in operating bituminization plants at nuclear power plants in Russia is presented and it is concluded that the bituminization method can be used together with other methods for solidifying low- and medium-level liquid radioactive waste. 12 references. |
