Description
Summary:FrameNet, a computer application for corpus-based lexicography that implements the model of frame semantics, is illustrated in a step-by-step description of the full treatment of a sample lexical unit, the verb tie. As the process starts with a description of the frame or conceptual structure to which the lexical unit belongs, a schematic characterization is developed for the frame of attaching & is accompanied by a working list of words that may belong to this frame, including verbs denoting the use of a connector to join one thing to another, & a separate list of nouns in the frame of connectors. Sentences containing tie are extracted from a corpus, frame elements are defined, the frame is entered into the database, & the lexical unit is added to the frame to generate random subcorpora; the latter are imported into the database & annotated. Annotation procedures for noncore frame elements, eg, time, & slot-filler nouns, eg, ribbon, are also described; the final report details the possibilities of valence & frame element realization for each lexical unit in a frame. 20 Figures.
