Summary: | The linguistic landscape of the Black village of El Palenque de San Basilio, near Cartagena, Colombia, is sketched, discussing (1) the village's social & linguistic history; (2) the chronological phases in the evolution of Palenquero Spanish; (3) the Costeno Spanish (the Caribbean coast variety of the Cartagena subzone) in Palenque; (4) Palenquero as one of the only two (the other being Papiamento) extant Afro-Iberian creoles in the Americas; (5) the phonetic & morphosyntactic peculiarities of Palenquero Spanish (the "kateyano"); & (6) a comparison of Andalusian Spanish, Palenque Spanish, Palenque Creole, & Costeno Spanish. Tables with selections of phonological & grammatical correspondences between these four varieties are included, & phonetic & grammatical features that never, or only very rarely, transfer from the creole to Palenquero Spanish are identified. The description of the vernacular Spanish of Palenque focuses on the question of whether current language use in this small Afro-American village sheds light on the vernacularization of American Spanish, especially the 17th- & 18th-century Caribbean Costeno variety of Cartagena Spanish. 3 Tables, 1 Map, 156 References.
