Summary: | The collection of papers included in this special issue seeks to contribute to the burgeoning field of impoliteness research, and to do so in a fashion that helps avoid replicating some of the common problems experienced traditionally by politeness scholars, namely, paucity of models, lack of interdisciplinary inquisitiveness and Anglo-centeredness. It also responds to the call for impoliteness to be theorized in its own right, not merely as the reverse of politeness, but also in relationship with politeness. Thus, as politeness strategies have been found to carry different values in different cultures, the realization and interpretation of impoliteness in different language and culture groups presents itself as a useful starting point to come to grips with conceptualizations of impoliteness.
