Summary: | The legacy of A. S. Hornby in the development of monolingual learner's dictionaires is assessed, & improvements in this extremely competitive field since the appearance in 1978 of the first substantial alternative to the Hornby series of monolingual learner's dictionaires are examined from the perspective of descriptive adequacy & target users' reference needs & skills. It is argued that Hornby's landmark work, Idiomatic and Syntactic English Dictionary (1942) & its precursors established a tradition within which more recent works have innovated while retaining basic principles of vocabulary control, examples chosen for pedagogical value, & focus on syntax & phraseology. Methodological implications of the revolution in electronic corpora are considered with respect to corpus inquiry procedures & the roles of analysis & synthesis in lexicography. Significant recent improvements are reviewed with focus on developments in dictionary navigation, the analysis & presentation of meaning, & the use of examples. 2 Appendixes, 72 References. J.
