Summary:It is observed that phonetics & lexicon are the principal areas of interest in language studies carried out in migrational contexts. However, immigrants' success/failure as effective communicators in the host community depends to a large extent on their knowledge of pragmatic strategies. This study attempts to combine migration linguistics & intra-/intercultural pragmatics in addressing the question of pragmatic accommodation in migration. A typology of migration is proposed, differentiating between internal & international types & movement to areas with the same vs different dominant language. Roger Andersson & Mats Thelander's (1994) classification of linguistic accommodation strategies is outlined. Four components of a study in pragmatics from the perspective of migration linguistics are identified, & literature survey is conducted to illustrate each: (1) research in contextualization clues, (2) comparative pragmatics (eg, Gumperz, John, 1982) consisting of comparisons between languages & regional/social varieties, (3) immigrants' discursive behavior & pragmatic accommodation in the host community (eg, Marquez Reiter, Rosina, 2003; Fant, Lars, 1996; Puga Larrain, Juana, 1997), & (4) diffusion of migration-caused language changes in the origin & host communities.
