Summary: | The authorship of an inscription in a 17th-century hand on the drawing Mystic marriage of St. Catherine at the Courtauld Gallery in London, England, has been narrowed down to the circle around the Dalmatian painter Andrea Meldolla, called Schiavone. An essay is presented that draws a connection between Schiavone and Spanish deaf-mute painter Juan Fernández Navarrete. The visual analogies between Schievone and Navarrete are considered, as is the unusual inscription de mano de el mudo (by the hand of the mute). |
