Description
Summary:This study examines the social risk and protection factors for excessive alcohol use, based on the data from the "National Survey on the prevalence of substance abuse in 2008", in a population of young Argentines, from 16 to 24 years of age. Bivariate and multivariate analyses were used. The following risk factors were observed: age at onset (the younger, the higher the risk); the Pampas region, Northwest and Northeast; males; from families with unsatisfied basic needs. Protective factors include idleness, no opportunity to try out illicit drugs, not being tempted to experiment with illicit drugs and no previous use of tobacco, or tranquilizers, or cocaine or cocaine-based substances in the lifetime. The results provide useful information to develop prevention programs for adolescents and young people.
